Inco to Face Class Action Suit Over Contamination

TORONTO - An Ontario court of appeal has certified a class action lawsuit that alleges that one of Inco's nickel refineries contaminated the environment of a small Ontario city, the law firm representing the plaintiffs said on Friday.

The homeowners in Port Colborne, on the north shore of Lake Erie, allege that the miner contaminated the area with nickel oxide when it operated a refinery in the city between 1918 and 1984. They are seeking damages for the alleged contamination.The group claims the nickel oxide has affected the physical and emotional health and wellbeing of the residents of Port Colborne. As well, the substance is alleged to have caused widespread damage to land, homes and businesses in the area.
