Small Quake Hits Near India-China Border - USGS

INDIA: September 5, 2008


NEW DELHI - A small earthquake measuring 5.1 hit northern India close to the border with China on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no immediate report of any casualties or damage.


The quake struck 355 km (220 miles) east-northeast of the Indian capital New Delhi at 1253 GMT at a depth of 10 km, the USGS said.

The Indian Meteorological Department said it had recorded the tremor but could not immediately give its magnitude. (Reporting by Krittivas Mukherjee; Editing by Paul Tait)
