CHINA: July 1, 2008
Rubbish collectors unload cardboard and shredded paper from their truck at a recycling centre located near the northern outskirts of Beijing.
In the lead-up to the Olympic Games starting on August 8, Beijing is shutting down its urban recycling centres, effectively cutting off the livelihoods of tens of thousands of migrant workers who make a living from the city?s scrap. The measure, which for most of the city?s more than 150,000 rubbish collectors means banishment to home provinces, is necessary to guarantee the health and safety of the millions of visitors that will descend on the capital during the Games, according to Beijing officials.
